Secondary Character: Mance Rayder
Epithet: The Mance
House: None (Wildling)
Mance Rayder is King-beyond-the-Wall, the head of the vast wildling host that marches ever onwards towards the Wall. But he was once a man of the Night's Watch. Mance's story begins when he and his black brothers had gone on a ranging. They had brought down a sizeable elk and were skinning it when the smell of blood drew a shadow-cat out of its lair. Mance managed to drive the beast away, but not before it shredded his cloak to ribbons, as well as wounding him in the arm and back. His brothers feared that Mance would die before they could get him back to the Shadow Tower, so they carried him to a wildling village where they knew they could find an old wise-woman who did some healing. The woman had died, but her daughter saw to Mance, cleaning and treating his wounds then feeding him food and potions until he recovered. She also sewed up the rents in Mance's black cloak, using some scarlet silk from Asshai that her grandmother had pulled from the wreck of a cog washed up on the Frozen Shore; it was her greatest treasure and her gift to Mance. However, when Mance returned to the Shadow Tower, he was given a new black wool cloak and told to burn his scarlet-and-black one; Ser Denys Mallister, the Commander of the Shadow Tower, had reminded him that the men of the Night's Watch dressed in only in black. Mance Rayder left the next morning, for a place where a man could wear any cloak he wanted.
