Main Character: Jon Snow
Epithet: Lord Snow (only by brothers of the Night’s Watch)
In the North, all bastard children are given the last name of Snow. Some say that the men of the North are so full of honor that they bring their bastards into their family; this is exactly what happened with Jon Snow. No one knows who his mother is, save for his late father, Lord Eddard Stark; it was a secret that the Lord of Winterfell took with him to the grave. Whoever his mother was, Jon Snow now forges his own destiny as a sworn brother of the Night's Watch. Cornered by wildlings during a scouting expedition, Jon is forced to kill his scouting party's leader, the fearsome Qhorin Halfhand. He manages to slay the near-legendary ranger, with some help from his direwolf, Ghost. Jon then goes over to the wildlings - the last command Qhorin had given to him before the wildlings had forced them to fight to the death. He rides with them, sleeps with them, learns everything about them - and even falls in love with one of them, Ygritte, a wildling woman. As they march towards the Wall, Jon wonders what will happen to Ygritte when he finally has to show his true colors and return to the Night's Watch in order to defend the realm against Mance Rayder's wildling host.
