Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets: Summary
Captain Underpants and the Attack of the Talking Toilets opens as Jerome Horowitz Elementary School is preparing for their annual Invention Convention. As a prize, the winners get to be principal for the day. George and Harold begin to imagine all the fun winning the competition could be for them, and they are eager to enter. Unfortunately, Principal Krupp forbids them to enter. The previous year, the boys played a prank on the entire school at the competition by glueing everyone to their seats instead of creating an actual invention. Angry that they are unable to enter the competition, George and Harold begin a plot to ruin the competition for everyone else by destroying their inventions.
The night before the competition, the boys sneak into to sabotage the students’ inventions. At first they think they are all along, but soon discover Melvin Sneedly, the school brainiac who is also known for being a tattletale. He is working on his invention the PATSY 2000. He demonstrates by showing George and Harold a picture of a mouse and the photocopier produces a real mouse. The boys think it is simply a trick, but cut a deal with Melvin that they will not ruin his invention if he promises not to tell on them.
The boys succeed in making the convention a colossal disaster. A series of pranks unfold and the student’s display their inventions. Principal Krupp is furious that the boys have once again ruined the event, and he proceeds to punish them by sending them to detention and assigning them lines to be written on the chalkboard everyday for the rest of the year. The boys create a device that allows them to write several lines at once, saving them a fantastic deal of time. In their spare time, they write a new Captain Underpants Comic.
This time the comic begins with a normal day at a school until a UFO appears, shooting the school with a ray that brings the toilets to life and causes them to eat everyone in the school. Captain Underpants puts an end to the madness by putting a plunger in the toilets mouths, preventing them from eating. Captain Underpants fights the Trubo Toilet 2000 and wins by giving him a wedgie. As the comic ends, the Turbo Toilet 2000 and the UFO are both destroyed and everything goes back to normal.
When the boys attempt to make copies of the comic, the secretaries office is filled with teachers, so they decide to use Melvin’s PATSY 2000 instead. However, it turns out to be a monumental mistake as the machine brings the evil toilets to life. The toilets begin to eat the teachers, and as someone snaps their fingers, Principal Krupp is transformed into Captain Underpants. He immediately devises a plan to stop the toilets. Captain Underpants along with George and Harold use underwear as slingshots to shoot disgusting cafeteria food into the toilet’s mouths. It causes them to throw up the unharmed teachers before dying themselves. However, the Turbo Toilet 2000 is missed, and it swallows Captain Underpants. The boys use the Patsy 2000 to create a robot plunger that defeats Turbo Toilet 2000 and saves Captain Underpants. The boys instruct the robot to repair the school before they or Principal Krupp get into trouble. To repay them, Principal Krupp names the boys Principal for the Day. The book ends as the boys tell Principal Krupp they sold the school furniture to pay for a carnival and fingers are snapped to turn Principal Krupp into Captain Underpants again.
The book contains some themes of disrespecting teachers and adults that may need to be discussed with children. The main characters, George and Harold, also ruin the property of other students in order to benefit themselves. They use blackmail and destruction to come out on top. Discuss these topics with your children and their appropriateness in real life.
