Series Two: Episode Four
As 1918 begins the tensions between Isobel and Cora over who is running the hospital come to a head when Isobel finds that Cora has reorganized the nurses’ schedule in order to make things easier for the Abbey staff. Isobel gives Cora an ultimatum, saying that she must have proper control or she will leave. Cora refuses to back down, and Isobel leaves to take up nursing in France.
Both the family and the servants are extremely concerned when news comes through that both Matthew, and William are missing in action in France.
Isobel’s cook and butler, Mrs. Bird and Molesley, decide to set up a soup kitchen for veterans whilst she is away. Mrs.Patmore and Daisy help them out and bring leftovers from the Abbey to add to their provisions. O’Brien discovers this and tries to get them in trouble by reporting it to Cora, but she is right behind the idea and starts helping out herself, making O’Brien help as well.
The Earl tracks Bates down to the pub he is working in and pays him a visit, which results in Bates returning to work at the Abbey.
Branson tells Sybil that he is sure that she is in love with him and that he will stay at the Abbey until she is ready to leave with him. Mary discovers the relationship between Sybil and Branson but agrees not to say anything. In her own love life, Mary is considering whether she should marry Sir Richard.
Mrs.Hughes catches Ethel in bed with one of the young officers and sacks her on the spot. However, she is forced to take a softer line when it is revealed that Ethel is pregnant.
