Secondary Character: Stannis Baratheon

Back to Main Page

Titles: Lord of Dragonstone, Master of Ships

House: Baratheon

Stannis Baratheon is the elder of King Robert Baratheon’s younger brothers. While Renly is all smiles and charm, Stannis is the exact opposite; a hard and unyielding man, Stannis considers even the smallest slight to his honor as a personal attack, to be dealt with as swiftly as possible. His stubborn determination in the face of adversity and overwhelming odds was never more on show than during Robert’s Rebellion, where he successful held Storm’s End against a siege led by a much bigger army – they say that when the food ran out, Stannis survived on rats and boiled leather.

Stannis sits on the King’s small council, as the master of ships, but when A Game of Thrones begins, it appears he has hastily left King’s Landing for unknown reasons. Upon digging deeper into the mystery of Jon Arryn’s sudden death, Eddard learns that both men had been spending a great deal of time with each other before Jon’s untimely death. Since neither Jon nor Stannis has been particularly close to each other, the question then becomes why.
