Secondary Character: Qhorin Halfhand
Second in command at the Shadow Tower, Qhorin Halfhand is half a legend in the Night's Watch, as well as amongst the wildlings who live north of the Wall. To his sworn brothers, Qhorin is one of the best rangers in the Watch; to the wildlings, the Halfhand is an extremely-skilled adversary and a frighteningly implacable foe. His maimed right hand is part of his legend - only the thumb and forefinger remain, the three other fingers having been lost when Qhorin caught a wildling's axe with his hand, an act that stopped what would certainly have been a fatal blow. Undaunted by the loss of one half of his right hand, Qhorin taught himself how to fight with his left hand. Such is Qhorin's skill and tenacity that he eventually became just as skilled wielding a sword with his left hand as he had been with his right. A big man who is sparse with words but swift with sword and action, Qhorin is chosen to lead a party of a hundred men from the Shadow Tower into the wild areas north of the Wall to bolster Jeor Mormont's two-hundred-strong expedition force from Castle Black.
