Secondary Character: Craster
Several days' journey north of the Wall lies Craster's Keep, a homestead consisting of a long and low hall, midden heap and pig sty, all sitting atop slightly elevated ground and surrounded by an earthen dike. The reality of the redoubt might be far from what its grand name suggests, but its existence out in the full wilderness beyond the Wall can often spell the difference between life and death for the rangers of the Night's Watch. The castle's namesake, Craster, was born to a wildling mother, who got pregnant with Craster after an encounter with a ranger from the Watch. Whether it's because of that (or despite it), Craster grudgingly allows rangers from the Night's Watch to take shelter in his hall during their rangings north of the Wall. He is, however, stubborn, territorial and a tenuous ally at best, and the rangers are always careful about not overstaying their welcome - and keeping their hands away from his many wives.
