Secondary Character: Brienne

Back to Main Page

Epithet: Brienne of Tarth, Brienne the Beauty

House: Tarth

Though there may be many men who call Brienne of Tarth a beauty, they do so not as a compliment, but in order to mock her. Taller, bigger and stronger than most men, Brienne is an extremely skilled warrior, and, despite the rigid societal rules laid out for women in the Seven Kingdoms, longs to be a true knight one day. However, Brienne still holds a very romanticized notion of knighthood, one where all knights are gallant and good, and summer songs are sung for those who fall in battle. This vision of knighthood is partly the reason behind her joining Renly Baratheon's army - she wants to prove herself, to test her mettle in battle and fight for a cause she truly believes in. And then of course, there's another reason why she's joined Renly's host - she's in love with him, and it's plain for anyone to see just how much she adores him. However, Brienne will soon come to learn that there is always an ugly side to war.
