Main Character: Davos Seaworth
Epithet: The Onion Knight
The story of Davos Seaworth is an exemplary tale of a man of common birth who, through an impressive act of bravery, was awarded with choice lands and a knighthood. Hailing from humble beginnings in the form of Flea Bottom in King's Landing, Davos grew up to be a capable sailor, and eventually turned his nautical talents to more lucrative profession: smuggling. As a smuggler, Davos was in his element, his black-sailed ship sneaking in and out of harbors in the dark of the night, quiet as a ghost. During the Siege of Storm's End, when Stannis Baratheon and a small party of men were struggling to hold off a far larger force, Davos did what few would dare to do - he sailed his ship through the enemy's blockade and smuggled in much-needed food to Stannis and his men, who had been reduced to eating their own horses and cats for food. Davos' supply of food, which included onions, meant that the defenders were able to survive long enough for Eddard Stark to reach Storm's End and break the siege. Stannis rewarded Davos with lands and a knighthood, but he also meted out punishment for all of the smuggler's many years of smuggling by chopping off the top joint of all the fingers on his left hand. Davos keeps the bones of the fingers joints in a pouch tied around his neck, believing they bring him good luck. He is one of Stannis' most loyal knights, and Stannis respects the fact that, unlike most of the other lords and knights who have joined his cause, Davos never tries to soften a hard truth or give false hope. The other lordlings and knights may look down on Davos' low birth and his position as Stannis' "Onion Knight", but Stannis knows Davos' true worth and often seeks his counsel in difficult times.
