Cloud Atlas: Chapter Summary (Chapter 7: An Orison of Sonmi-451)
Sonmi guesses that Hae-Joo Im is actually a Union member and decides to trust him anyway. They flee the University and discard their souls before getting into the car.
They are being chased; there is the feeling of vertigo and then they crash. Sonmi is pulled out by Hae-Joo, and he goes down a manhole. Sonmi follows, and there is another car waiting on the level below. Now that they are inconspicuous, they enter normal traffic. They are headed to Huamdonggil, a shanty town full of unfortunate purebloods.
Once in Huamdonggil, they enter the residence of Ma Arak Na, who Hae-Joo simply calls The Madam. Madam takes them into a parlor, where a 3-D is put on, and a carp comes into focus. The carp introduces himself as An-Kor Apis of Union and apologizes for the disguise. He orders Commander Im to take Sonmi out of Seoul.
An implanter comes in and removes Sonmi’s collar, giving her a real soul. Her new name is Yun-An Yoo. The next stop is Madam Ovid, a facescaper who makes it so that Sonmi can pass for a pureblood.
On the way out of the city, they are stopped by guards but play stupid. Once outside the city, they drive to a genomics unit housing unborn fabricants. Sonmi asks why the Union went through so much trouble to find her. Hae-Joo explains that Nea So Copros is slowly killing itself with capitalism, and since fabricants are the perfect organic machinery, Nea So Copros did not slide back into barbarism with the rest of the world. The Union wants to use Sonmi as a figurehead for the revolution, and their plan is to make all the fabricants in the city ascend at the same time.
Eventually they come to a mountainside colony made up of purebloods who live off the land. The Abbess is the oldest; she believes in Siddharta and reincarnation. Sonmi notices that the colonists seem happy compared to the city dwellers.
The next day they continue their journey. On a bridge, they run into an expensive-looking car. A man and a woman step out, and the man throws a living fabricant doll off the edge.
At nightfall, they reach Pusan. Hae-Joo has a room in the city. He leaves to attend a Union meeting and leaves Sonmi in the apartment. When he gets back, he shows her the ocean out the window.
General Apis wants Sonmi to see something before she makes her decision about whether or not to become a figurehead for the revolution. Hae-Joo takes Sonmi aboard Papa Song’s ship, the Golden Ark, where twelve-starred fabricants are promised a lifetime of happiness for their hard service. Inside, there are hundreds of server fabricants lined up, excited about their new life. They go through into a room where they are killed, and then taken to be butchered and reused in other fabricants as well as the production of Soap.
The Archivist is shocked at what Sonmi is describing, and downright denies it.
After the horrific scene, Sonmi agrees to join the revolution. She spends the next 3 weeks writing the Declaration. After the text was completed, she knew she would be arrested. She knew the whole thing had been a script. The Union provides Nea So Copros with the perfect enemy to keep social cohesion. They have made every pureblood fear fabricants. Sonmi went along with it because she knew her declarations would be heard throughout Nea So Copros.
Sonmi’s story is now finished. She asks for one last request from the Archiver, his laptop. She wants to finish watching The Ghastly Ordeal of Timothy Cavendish.
