Character: Robert Crawley, Earl of Grantham
(played by Hugh Bonneville)
The Earl of Grantham (b.1869) is the owner of Downton Abbey; to look after the estate and its staff is his occupation. He is the son of the late Patrick Crawley and his wife Violet, brother to Rosamund and father to Mary, Edith and Sybil. He is married to Cora, an American whom we learn he married for her money but came to love and trust deeply. His devotion does not ensure his fidelity, however, as we see him enter into a (quickly aborted) relationship with his housemaid Jane. The Earl has a strong sense of duty and fought in the Boer War, though his age prevents him having more than a courtesy position in WWI. He loses most of his wife's money in share dealings and towards the end of the third series is starting to accept that he must modernise to survive.
