Character: Lady Edith Crawley
(played by Laura Carmichael)
Lady Edith (b.1894) is the second daughter of the Earl and Countess of Crawley. She is a slightly bitter character who does not get on with her sister Mary and spreads the rumors about her affair with Pamuk which could ruin Mary. Her love life is a series of failures: she was truly in love with her late cousin Patrick, unlike Mary, who was supposed to marry him. She then tries to interest Matthew Crawley, who only wants Mary, falls for a married farmer during the war and then the probable impostor Patrick Gordon. At the end of the series, she is reunited with Sir Anthony Strallan, an earlier suitor, and it seems her life may become more settled. However, he leaves her at the altar and she resigns herself to being a spinster.
